India won the first ODI on September 22 at Mohali, taking a 1-0 series lead.

After winning the toss, Australian captain Steve Smith decided to bowl first. In addition to Mohammed Siraj, India continued to rest Jasprit Bumrah during the game. In order to improve the team's fast-bowling section, Prasidh Krishna was added. Australia, on the other hand, announced that Steve Smith will serve as the team's captain while Pat Cummins was rested for this match. Additionally, Spencer Johnson made his ODI debut.

Josh Hazlewood sent out Ruturaj Gaikwad for 8 runs, but shortly after, Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill teamed up and began to fully control the Australian bowling. The Australian bowlers were unable to fend off their assault as the pair quickly amassed 200 runs for the second wicket.

Shreyas Iyer was dismissed for 105 runs, his third century in one-day internationals and his first after rejoining the Indian team following a protracted absence due to a back injury and surgery.

Shubman Gill scores a magnificent 104 runs in ODIs to extend his hot streak.

Being at his best, Shubman Gill might have wasted the chance to record a century in Mohali by exiting the pitch during a simple chase. But he was determined not to miss out this time. He scored 50 in 37 balls and continued the assault while completely overpowering Australian bowling.

In just 92 balls, Gill hit his sixth ODI century and appeared to be headed for a massive score. But he was out for 104 runs and died while attempting to get a big score.

Shubman Gill, who after 35 ODI innings became the first hitter to amass 1900 runs, received plaudits from both cricket fans and players.
